Ford Figo vs Nissan Micra Active – Two popular hatchbacks in comparison

In the Indian automobile market, the hatchbacks are always in demand because of the congested city roads. The competition is stiff in this segment as the prospective buyers scrutinize even the smallest of the details. Giving maximum features within a budget is the motto of most of the makers.

Nissan Motors India Private Limited had launched the Micra in this segment in 2010. An upgraded version, Micra Active was launched in July 2013 in 4 petrol versions only. Ford India Private Limited launched the Figo in March 2010 and is available in 4 petrol and 4 diesel versions. As both these vehicles are in great demand, a comparison of the two will be informative.

The prices of the Micra Active vary from Rupees 3, 37,859 to 4, 79,580 and that of the Figo from 4.13 to 4.72 lakhs.

The most important difference in the two is the availability of a diesel version. Only Figo has diesel variants. The exterior of the Figo is done with a kinetic design and has a muscular appearance. The hexagonal grille, fog lights, body coloured electrically operated ORVMs, 13” alloy wheels and a rear wiper are the special features on the outside of the Figo. The sporty Micra Active has a double layer integrated grille, tweaked clear lens headlights, a bigger air dam and 14” standard wheels as external features.


The cabins of both these 5 seaters are spacious with a manual AC and fabric seat covers. No music system is provided for base variants. In the Figo, Durotorq Titanium version a 2 Din music system with Bluetooth connectivity is available. In 2014, the Ford Company had announced that Wi-Fi facility would be available in all their future models. The base variants of both the models have minimum safety features. Only the Figo Titanium and the Micra Active XV Safety pack have air bags at the front, ABS and EBD, engine immobilisers and child lock facilities. For the Active Safety pack there is a keyless entry and 12V sockets additionally.

The Nissan is powered by an 1198 cc, 3 cylinders, 4 DOHC petrol engine giving a mileage of 19.49 kmpl. For the Figo, an 1196 cc, 4 cylinders, 4 DOHC petrol engine giving a mileage of 15.6 kmpl is used. The diesel Figo uses a 1399 cc, 68 bhp engine with a fuel efficiency of 22 kmpl.

The external dimensions of the Micra Active are 3280 mm length, 1665 mm width and 158 mm ground clearance and that of the Figo are 3795 mm length, 1660 mm width and 165 mm ground clearance. The steering is electric power assisted rack and pinion type for the Active and the hydraulic power steering for the Figo.
